"AMGtech - now with more recalls!" (amgtech)

Here’s the story: my beloved Monster is still in the shop and has a 1% chance of being finished on Wednesday. My dad is flying in Wednesday and renting a Harley. We’re taking a trip down the coast to the redwoods, over to crater lake, and then over Mt. Hood. About 1000 miles over three days. I really want my Monster for this, but it’s not happening. Here are my options:
Rent from a motorcycle version of Turo, with an expected cost of $500-800 depending on the bike I choose assuming I can actually get a hold of the owner. It’s been hit or miss so far. But I’ve made contact with the owner of a Multistrada 950, which would set me back about $750. Most other options in my area are... less than ideal for my intended use.
Ori could rent from an actual rental company such as Motoquest . That would be about the same price as Moto Turo, but for (hopefully) am F800GS. Which, I think would be less ideal for this trip.
Finally, I could buy another bike. A local dealer has a bunch of 2017 Africa Twins in stock for under $10k. However, they’re large and heavy and 2018 made a ton of improvements. I might go ride one tonight after work.
The KTM 790 Adventure is out, which is perfect on paper. But I’ve heard of reliability issues and warranty hassles. Anyone know anything?
Long time favorite option of mine; Triumph Tiger 800, preferably in xca/x trim. Wonderful engine and chassis. Looks cool. Fantastic on road and pretty good off. Current Triumph promotion gets you free aluminum side cases with a new Tiger, about $10 00 value in the real world ($1300 according to dealer pricing). They’re very nice cases. A guy I work with took advantage of this deal on an xr trim Tiger.
Or, something else entirely... Triumph or Indian Bobber? Bonneville? G310GS? Scout Sixty?
Tldr: Moto trip, monster in shop, rent a bike or buy a new one? If buy, which bike?

You came here to be talked OUT of buying a bike? You may as well go to a bar and dare anyone to talk you out of buying a beer.

So what you’re telling me is that you have a perfectly legit excuse to buy a long time favou
rite bike in the Triumph T
iger and you don’t already have a bike that can do what the Triumph can do
? I think you’ve already answered that question.

I vote for buying something instead of renting something. You can always sell it later if you end up not wanting it anymore.

I’ll talk you out of buying the AT by suggesting you snatch up that Triumph.

Are you near any E agle rider locations? They have a lot of selection. I’d say rent a bike though since you said you’d prefer to do this trip on your Duc anyways.

Option 1: Buy Craigslist bike, ride on adventure, sell afterwards.
Option 2: Buy a Versys 650. Good bike, good engine, reliable, well under $10k, nobody ever says anything negative about them. The Goldilocks of street bikes.
Option 3: Buy a new Tuono. Put obnoxiously loud exh aust on it. Acknowledge that riding an un-muffled Aprilia V4 on an empty mountain road is mankind’s greatest achievement. Do wheelies. Do 100+ mph through tunnels, and pretty much anywhere else . Begin to reflect on poor life choices, acknowledge that you generally wasted your existence by settling for less than you could & should have in all matters , up until getting the bike. Be sad anytime you are not riding.

I recall someone on here buying a VTX 1300, riding cross country, then reselling when they got back. Do that maybe?

Hmmm... I may have to join when you look at those Hondas. The deal on the T riumph sounds sweet, an d the current version got some nice upgrades, but I thi nk you’re getting more bike for the money with the Honda (plus the atwin paint is sweet)
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

To be fair I haven't ridden a Tiger and the monster had been a bigger favorite for longer. A coworker is bringing his Tiger to work tomorrow for me to try out.

Option 1: might as well keep whatever I buy. Who doesn’t need more bikes?
2: meh. They’re fine. But... Meh.
3. Too similar to Monster.

Nah. That was decay. It was so he could ride on the salt flats without feeling bad. If I'm buying I want to keep.

KLR does nothing for me. GS’s are too much money for what you get, and also do nothing for me.

Ah but the Tiger can go off road, Monster not so much
. Also the less miles you put on an Italian bike the better right? You’re technically saving money in the log run.

I see some cruisers on your list so I suggest the following.
Yamaha Warrior. Light (for a cruiser) good suspension, looks good, fast, super reliable, under 5k alllll day long.
Yamaha Roadliner 1900. Big, comfy, plenty o’ power, fucking gorgeous , especially in black, well under 10k, usually sitting closer to 6k. (also see Stratoliner)

Weeeeelllllllllllll.... Define off road....
I’ve definitely had the monster places you wouldn't take most cars. But I don't off road that much. I do think the Tiger is probably my best option, but the price of the Africa is so good it's at least worth a ride.

You can always get an RSV4. It’s even more V4 goodness, but pretty much useless on the street. Then once you realize how much better it would be suited to riding on a track, you can do a track day, and switch to track riding exclusively , and buy a diesel truck and toy hauler, and then switch to racing. There’s no scenario that plays out where you haven’t exhausted all of your disposable income, or take it a step too far and end up completely bankrupt. But it’s fun!

I spent a good deal of time oohing and ahhing at the Seattle Triumph dealership. That T iger is so cool
Alternatively... Does Decay have anything well-suited for the trip? Maybe you could trade favors or something. Save your pennies for the new streetfighter... Hngg!

Maybe? I’m not comfortable asking for that kind of favor.
Too much crossover with the Monster! And I don't want to pay maintenance costs on two Ducatis, I'm not made of money!
